QUESTION: My technical presentations are boring. What can I do about it?
ANSWER: Technical presentations are often boring because the presenter fails to understand the goal of the presentation. Instead of thinking “I need to tell them everything I know.” they should be thinking “I need to engage them in the conversation so that they leave the room understanding this stuff.” In more persuasive situations, “ready to take action.”
This shift in thinking will lead you to realize that your role should be that of educator, not just speaker.
In addition, I often hear technical and financial people grumble that they can’t get excited about their topic.
Well… that may be the case, but you still have a responsibility to your listeners. If you can’t get passionate about your topic, find a way to get passionate about helping your listeners understand it.
